The School of Industrial Technical Education (SITE) was among the three schools which admitted the very first batch of students for the NCE programme in 1989/90 academic session. On 10th May 1990, the school commenced lectures with about 35 students for the 1999/90 session. Messrs M.E. Ezeabikwa, R.N.C. Udu, E.J. Ezubelu, M.N. Esomonu, G.A.O. Ogalanya and a few others were among the pioneer staff that saw these through the 1989/90 academic session.
Prior to the establishment of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) by Decree No. 3 of 1989, the job of superintending NCE technical teacher education was vested on the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
Thus the only existing NCE Technical Teacher Education curriculum in May 1990 was that patented under the auspices of the NBTE. However, not quite long after its establishment, the NCCE released the maiden issue of the Minimum Standards for NCE teachers which were a revised and reviewed version of the NBTE syllabus.
A period of 3 years meritorium was given to colleges to switch over to the Minimum Standards. In pursuance of its primary statutory function, the NCCE paid a pre-accreditation visit to the college in 1992, while the actual accreditation exercise took place in April 1994.
Based on the maiden issue of the NCE Minimum Standards, students in the School of Industrial Technical Education were allowed to specialize in only 4 trade areas. However, with the coming into effect of the revised minimum standards in November 1996, Automobile Technology Education became the 5th distinct trade areas in which students could specialize.
Thus, at present, the 5 trade areas in which students can specialize include:
– Automobile Technology Education
– Building Technology Education
– Electrical Electronics Education
– Mechanical/Metal Work Technology Education, and –
Wood Work Technology Education.
Technical Drawing is a compulsory course for all students in the School of Industrial Technical Education. Over the years, SITE has grown both in students’ population and infrastructural facilities. It must however be placed on record that the quantity and quality of tools and equipment procured for the School of Industrial Technical Education in the last 18 months by far out-numbered those procured for the school in the first eight years of its existence.

The school graduated 20 students as the first batch of NCE graduates in the 1991/92 and since then the school has been graduating students in the trade areas. The academic programmes of the school were among the college programmes accredited in September 1999, and presented 42 students for the NCE final examinations in the 1999/2000 session. Although the staff strength has fluctuated over the years, the School now enjoys the services of 39 seasoned and dedicated academic staff, and 10 strong and hardworking support staff.
Almost all the academic staff within are engaged in staff development to meet with the conditions of their service. Mention should be made of the staff who labored or are still laboring to keep this school. They are:
